Benito Zambrano
Filmmaker trained in Dramatic Arts and screenwriter graduated from the International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. He began his career with short films in the late 80s, such as “La última humillación” (1987) and “El encanto de la luna llena” (1995), awarded at international festivals.
In 1999 he made his feature debut with “Solas”, an intimate drama that won the Audience Award at the Berlinale and five Goya Awards, including Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay. His success continued with the miniseries “Padre coraje” (2002) and “Habana Blues” (2005), a film that participated in Cannes (“Un Certain Regard”) and earned him Goya Awards for Best Original Music and Editing.
In 2011 he premiered “La voz dormida”, an adaptation of Dulce Chacón’s novel focused on Francoist repression; the film received three Goya Awards and projected his career internationally. In 2019 he directed “Intemperie”, an Andalusian postwar western that won him the Goya for Best Adapted Screenplay and several awards at national festivals.
His most recent works include “Pan de limón con semillas de amapola” (2021), nominated for the Goya for Best Adaptation, and “El salto” (2024), which addresses the Sub-Saharan migration crisis.
